Steaming small timber laminates ….

April 1, 2016

A steamer made from pipe is used to bend thin laminates of hardwood for the repair or fabrication of new lodging knees. The steam is not under pressure but fills the pipe with steam from a 240 volt small machine ( black object in top photo. ) After about two hours the timber is removed and shaped.

A pipe bending hydraulic press is used to bend the steamed timber to the required shape. This procedure is generally successful

Two laminates – successful and unsuccessful.
